Ghost Story of the Day

Galveston Ghosts

What had happened to my mother and I was roughly 19 years ago in Galveston, Texas when I was 10 years old. We had just arrived back in Texas from Kentucky because my mom was looking for a job and well... Ron Reagan WAS president, if that explains anything. :)

Anyway, we found this rooming/boarding house referred to us by this crisis housing place where we could stay rent-free for 12 weeks. When we got there, this really nice guy gave Momma and I this really big room in this HUGE 3 story house - real pretty. Rose painted walls, red linens, red furniture... I look back now, this place would have made a good room in an old brothel, plus it was nice and cool (almost cold), which was really nice as it was in the middle of summer on the Gulf of Mexico. The guy made it a point - I remember this distinctly - of telling us to not worry about the noises in the house, especially late at night and also to make sure that I didn't walk around the house alone in the dark. Momma thought that was kind of weird, but agreed - hey, we weren't sleeping in the car so we were ready to agree to just about anything at that point.

So, time lapse a few weeks into our stay. The guy makes Momma the manager of the place, a rooming house, and leaves for days at a time. We have full run of the place, with a tenant living upstairs and another living downstairs, who were all really nice, too. We all share a kitchen and two baths, plus a common area as well as a dining room. Some people came and went, but everyone got along nicely in the long run. Sometimes I'd be in the kitchen and I'd hear someone ask for some ice because of the heat (there was no AC in the house, only fans, but our room was still really cold most times) and I'd hand them the tray when no one was there, or I would be playing on the porch and hear my mom calling me and when I'd go inside to see what she wanted it turned out she hadn't even called me... but other than that, nothing scary.

One night, we were all in the living room watching TV with all the fans on when all of a sudden it got real cold in there and the lights in the lamps exploded. Mom and everyone else was pretty spooked, and Momma decided right then and there that even if we were staying there rent free plus her mini-salary, we were getting the heck out of there the next day... the other two tenants decided that they too were leaving the next day. Momma and I went to our room, and she went to shower. I remember feeling really weird about being in the bathroom by myself so I made my mom stay in the bathroom while I took a shower and I stayed in there while she took one, too. While we were still in the bathroom, there was loud banging on the door that echoed throughout the bathroom... I started crying and Momma jumped out of the tub and locked the door - we could hear the lady upstairs screaming her head off as well as the woman downstairs and this banging just kept going through the house getting louder and louder. Then it stopped.

We got out of the bathroom, and just then the other two women ran from opposite directions yelling things like "Did you hear that?" and "What the &*$# was THAT?!". Since the owner wasn't there, we didn't have a man there to investigate. One of the ladies left that night and the other one was going to go with us in the morning. We went back to our room and packed up, and I sat on the bed to read and just wind down - Momma was sitting in the chair basically getting her stuff together, I guess grownup stuff. The room, always pretty cool, got gradually colder to the point that we both had sweaters on even with the windows open and it was about 75 outside. All of a sudden, the bed that I was on at first just felt like someone had sat down next to me... I thought nothing of it and didn't mention to Momma. Then it felt like someone sitting on the bed and bouncing on it, to the point to where it squeaked - even my mom was like, "Baby, quit bouncing the bed, that's annoying as all sin." Then before I could reply, it was like a scene straight from The Exorcist. I kid you not.

We left that night.

Here it is, almost 20 years later, my mother has passed on and I am a mother myself. I think about this form time to time, analyzing it and trying to find some sort of rhyme or reason to it. I brought myself to return to this house a few years ago after the death of my mother to see if I "felt" anything, and also to see if I was nuts or not... all that's left of it is the remains from a fire that, according to the neighbor who was still there after all these years, the really nice man had started himself to get rid of the bad things in that house.

Go figure. The address of this property is on 14th street in Galveston, Texas. The seawall is a few blocks away. See for yourself, and good luck.
