Haunted House in Calgary, Canada

(we think this story has the same source as "Nanny's Haunted House")

What a shock it was to find out Nanny's house was really haunted! To look at it, it is no different from any other pre-war period country house. Sprawling over half an acre, with its neatly manicured lawn and shrubbery, it seems like the most unlikely of places to have a questionable history. But she has assured my family that her tales of flying dishes, clocks that stop each night at precisely midnight, and footsteps in the halls are true. The neighbors have witnessed yelping dogs flying through plate glass windows in a frantic attempt to escape what was inside the house. This might sound weird, but when you consider the history of the house, it may not be so impossible to understand. During World War II, the house was a refuge for children of Japanese prisoners of war. With its white stucco walls, and a high fence surrounding the property, it has a severe look to it that only the greenery of the gardens interrupts. Sometime after the War, it was used as a Presbyterian church. This seems a little less likely given its harsh appearance. Sometime after the church changed locations, the house was sold as a residence. It was during this time that a frightening thing occurred. A man's young wife witnessed things so grizzly that she was driven insane. It was during a horrible confrontation between them that he lost control and stabbed her to death. The neighbors saw him run from the house screaming wildly and called the authorities. They committed him to an asylum where he died shortly thereafter. If that weren't enough, Nanny's mother-in-law practiced voodoo in the basement. Not long after they moved into the house, a trip to the basement produced some surprises. Nanny and her husband found many valuable books whose edges had been singed, Ouija boards, tarot cards, and other evidence that many sinister acts had gone on in the house. A copy of the woman's diary validated that she had indeed been trying to conjure up the spirits of the dead. Whether she ever succeeded we may never know. One thing is for sure: the house makes for great conversation!
